Three Special Gifts

Scroll to the bottom for  Governor Donna's Tales for Tots Project

Recently I was asked what my favorite time of the year is.  Without hesitation, I responded now!  There’s a special excitement as the holidays approach.  It makes no difference whether we are bright eyed children or mature adults, the joy of giving and loving is shared by all.

As Kiwanians we know that special joy of giving as we give the true gift, the gift of ourselves.  We give our time, our talents, our energy and our enthusiasm as we work to make this world a better place.

Along with all this giving, there are rewards.  The rewards are abundant and not always immediately apparent.  Many of the rewards are long lasting and we reap the benefits for years to come.  We are rewarded with friendships, personal growth, the joy and satisfaction of helping others and a sense of accomplishment.

This holiday season, I encourage you to give three special gifts.  The first is the gift of Kiwanis. You know all the benefits of giving this gift to others as you are a Kiwanian!  Invite someone to join so they may experience firsthand the many rewards of being a Kiwanian.

The second gift has no buttons, no lights, no sounds, no wires, no batteries, and no microchips. It can stimulate the mind, stir the imagination, and increase intelligence.  Can you identify this portable, mood altering, mind activating, inspiring item? A BOOK!  Kiwanians have a unique opportunity this holiday season and beyond to show how much they CARE by---Creating Awesome Reading Experiences as they get involved in”. Scroll to the bottom of this message for more information about this project.

The third gift you can give to yourself and the special people in your life. Come sail with Past Governor Bob and me on our 7 Night Kiwanis “Fun Cruise”, March 27 - April 3, 2010.  We'll visit St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, San Juan, Puerto Rico and Nassau, Bahamas.  While in Nassau, we'll join Kiwanians from Nassau and present our gifts of books to some of the island's children.  What a meaningful and rewarding end to an exciting "Ocean Adventure."  Read more about the cruise and select your cabins right here on our website.

Have a delightful December as you give the gifts that show you care!

Fondly,

Donna

Tales for Tots is an easy to do project with great benefits!

Every K Family club is encouraged to get involved.

Research has shown the remarkable impact early exposure to books has upon the development of young children.  Without a doubt, children who have rich early reading experiences develop language, vocabulary, and literacy skills which will enable them to succeed in school and in life.  Many children devoid of these literary experiences never catch up with their peers; and they deal with the constant frustrations of struggling in school.  Successful early literacy projects have long term benefits in terms of increased school success, increased graduation rates, and a reduction in crime.  When you support an early reading program, you are investing in a cause that improves our society and its future.

It’s as easy as learning your ABCD’s
to give a gift that can change a young life.

A  Acquire new or previously loved books.

B     Bring the books to any Head Start school or group that works with children from infant to age 5. Look for places with needy children.

C            Celebrate!  Create an Awesome Reading Experience by reading to a child or to group of children.  The bond that forms between the reader and the listener as they share a reading experience fosters the greatest form of human interaction a child can have: communication with someone who CARES.

D                 Donate the book to the child so reading can continue at home.  On the inside cover inscribe (child’s name) loves to read.
